Combining Iron and Technology for Construction

Robert Stewart, PhD, PE

Construction projects on waterways have occurred across the world since the first civilized societies developed. Engineers and practitioners have relied on technological advances to make water resources projects a reality.  Modern water projects have evolved from hard engineering approaches involving concrete to naturalized streams with riparian corridors and fringe wetlands. Shovels, picks, and chisels of early construction tools have been replaced with excavators, track trucks, and lots of computers. We explore modern technologies and equipment used in stream restoration construction. These technologies include low ground pressure track trucks, survey control, and CAD for redesign when unexpected site conditions are encountered.  When these technologies and equipment are combined in the hands of skilled operators stream restoration construction is faster, cheaper, and better compared to the practices most often used a decade ago. One thing that hasn’t changed is the hard-working men and women that are proud to put in a long days work and see a successful project complete.
