Floodplain Reconnection in Maryland’s Suburban Coastal Plain and Beyond

This presentation will focus on the restoration of Marley Creek at Ruth Parker Eason School, which utilized a valley-wide floodplain reconnection strategy to address a highly eroded channel in suburban Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The session will begin with an overview of the site's existing conditions, followed by a detailed exploration of the conceptual design approach, design progression, and project evolution through to its completion in 2024. The latter portion of the presentation will highlight several similar restoration projects within Anne Arundel County, examining both their shared elements and differences. The presentation will conclude with a discussion on the potential applicability of this design approach in other geographic regions and watershed contexts.
