Stream restoration projects along the East Coast play a pivotal role in enhancing ecosystems and achieving water quality objectives. In this presentation, we will delve into eight case studies of stream restoration efforts, focusing on both successes and challenges related to beaver activity during project design and construction. Our intended audience includes individuals interested in or actively engaged in stream restoration projects.
During our discussion, we will explore the intricacies of planning for and attracting beavers, examine unintended consequences of beaver presence at project sites, and share valuable insights from monitoring and adaptive management. Additionally, we’ll present innovative ideas for the future. As a result of our collaboration among presenters—from the watershed-wide non-profit organization Chesapeake Bay Trust to the professional volunteer state organization Maryland Stream Restoration Association, and down to the local county level (Anne Arundel County, Maryland)—we aim to contribute to the overall success of beaver populations and stream restoration projects. Our collective efforts foster learning and inspire new ideas based on past experiences.
