Kings Branch Stream Restoration and Flood Reduction Project

The Lexington Green Apartment complex in Charlotte, North Carolina has been historically affected by repeated flooding issues. The complex consists of six separate buildings located on one parcel within the 100-year floodplain. In 2018, Mecklenburg County performed a feasibility study to evaluate the extent of the flooding and the viability of using natural channel design techniques within Kings Branch to help mitigate the flooding. Using this feasibility study the County obtained a $3 million grant from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Hazard Mitigation Program to restore/stabilize approximately 6,000 linear feet of Kings Branch and its floodplain from Archdale Road to Arrowwood Road. The goals of the project include reducing the flood risk at Lexington Green and improving water quality. The desired result is a reduction in the 100-year base flood elevation of over four feet, thereby removing the affected buildings from the mapped floodplain limits. The design of this project includes almost 1,300 linear feet of sanitary sewer relocation and coordination with Charlotte Water public utility, as well as significant hydraulic modeling to verify the proposed flood reductions. Kimley-Horn was selected in December 2021 to design and permit the project in a condensed timeline to meet the grant funding deadlines. The presentation will cover the history of the project, the grant process and requirements, technical components of the project, and highlight the results.
