Adapting in the Field - An Engineer's Take
Jake Dittes, PE

During the construction phase for many stream restoration and dam removal projects there are problems that arise in the field that require adaptation. There are numerous reasons as to why that may be the case – like an unsurveyed pipe or natural changes in field conditions – whatever the case may be, a solution is required to move forward with construction. This presentation will discuss things to consider when such inevitable problems come up during construction. As a field engineer, I see first-hand the things that work and the things that don't when working toward a solution to a problem in the field. With experience on dam removal projects and stream restoration projects in multiple states, I have seen a broad range of problems which require adaptation in the field. Field changes are bound to come up during a project and it is important for project partners to work through these problems together and find the best solution for all parties involved. I hope this presentation will give contractors, regulators, and other engineers insight into techniques that work best when field changes need to be made.
